Writers Setting Goals = Writers Selling Words

It’s time for the first Owensboro Writers Group meeting of 2012.  Come on over to the Daviess County Public Library on Saturday, January 21 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.  We’ll save you a seat in the second floor meeting room.

And you know what the January meeting means – time to get serious about your writing goals for the coming year.  (I heard those groans!)  Let’s make this process easier.

Start with something small, something you know for sure you can accomplish.  Maybe that’s a daily or even a weekly goal.

Once you’ve moved that far out of your comfort zone, tiptoe a little closer to the edge and figure out something you can do on a monthly basis.

Whoohoo!  You’re hanging over the edge, feeling the wind in your hair, and guess what!  You arrived there in such small steps that you didn’t even think about fearing what you are about to face.

So go for it.  Go big.  Make a six-month goal.  Really think about this one.  What can you write, learn, accomplish in a six-month period?  Take a hard look at your weekly and monthly goals.  How do those goals work together to build a first draft, a series of articles, a chapbook of very personal poetry?

Okay, deep breath. And one, two, three – go for the one-year goal.  What will you have accomplished in one year’s time when you fold all your weekly and monthly accomplishments together?

There, that wasn’t so scary was it?  It’s one day at a time, until it’s one week at a time.  All those weeks will blend together into months of work, and suddenly you’ve reached that one-year goal that was shining so far in the distance in January of 2012.  In December, you’ll be taking your bow for that new manuscript, that series of articles sold, that writer you’ve become.  And we’ll be the ones applauding.

Bring your 2012 Writing Goals with you to the meeting and share with the group.

Christmas Gift # 6: JINGLE Three

Just at the edge of town, someone set up an old shed.

Inside, cows and donkeys placidly grazed on the grass overflowing the wooden grain crib.

No one knew, or would admit, who placed the star-light garland on the fences leading to and from the scene.

Gaily wrapped trees appeared within a few days, with no one the wiser to the identity of the person who wrapped each trunk with wide red ribbons finished with huge bows.

Later, in the dead of one snowy night, came the shepherds and angels – townspeople taking their turn to stand in the cold and complete the holy scene.

Even years later no one knew who set that lonely open shed along the side of the road, nor who added to it day by day, until Christmas was born in the hearts of all who passed by.

Christmas Gift # 5: JINGLE Two

Just one hoof catching on a chimney top was all it took to bring the sleigh spiraling earthward.

Intense shouting and rein-pulling by the driver was the only thing that prevented a ground-shaking crash.

Now the problem was getting the damaged sleigh airborne from inside the narrow, dead-end alley where it rested.

Galloping straight at the wall, Rudolph’s nose scraped the bricks as, with a stupendous effort, he and his teammates hurled themselves skyward.

Luckily, there was no overhang on the roof of the tenement.

Elves were already sniggering over his red nose, it was a good thing he hadn’t bent his antlers as well.

Christmas Gift # 4: Coming Back

Coming Back

You’re coming back, aren’t You?

One more time.

One more time

Angel voices will sing.

Bells will ring out in the land.

You’re coming back

while soldiers still work to

defend peace with their bodies.

One more time

While the Beast still

Works to obliterate life’s pulse.

You’re coming back to us.

Humble infant gazing

Up into our weary eyes.

We reach for you,

make our heart’s promise,

one more time

To wait, to watch, to listen

for the cry of your new life

and your claim on ours.

You’re coming back, aren’t You?

One more time.

Christmas Gift # 3: JINGLE One

Just about everyone in town showed up for the Christmas parade.

Inside an hour, the temperature dropped like a rocket plummeting to earth.

No one remembered the weather forecaster calling for a blizzard, but everyone was soon covered with an inch of ‘partly cloudy’.

Grandparents and parents bundled the young folk into cars and vans along the route, hushing the whining with promises to stay until the grand finale.

Lights from the vehicles shone eerily through the storm, until Santa’s float popped out of the blowing snow like the Ghost of Christmas Next Week.

Everyone agreed it was the best parade since Barney down at the gas station lit flares too near his pumps while lining out the parade route for last year’s Fourth of July.

Christmas Gift # 2: Christmas in Missouri

Christmas in Missouri

We're moving. Again! I can't believe Mom & Dad are relocating after school has started but before Christmas. I know Dad has a new job, but is it worth moving all the way from Russellville, KY to Hannibal, MO?

It doesn't matter what I think. It never does. I'm just a kid. No, worse, I'm a teenager. Nobody listens to a teenager, especially parents who have four younger children to worry about.

So, here I go to pack all of my belongings. Maybe, just maybe, I'll have my own room.

***

Hannibal isn't the worst place I've ever lived. We live out in the country and there must be  at least twenty acres! There's a humongous pond in front of our home and the house has a indoor bathroom that works! Many of our previous houses had an outdoor toilet or else the one inside didn't work.

Best of all, I do have my own room! A fifteen year old shouldn't have to share a room with both of her younger sisters!

However, our first day in the new school was a mess! Our records weren't transferred. When asked how well I did in English Literature, I didn't know how to answer. I don't even remember what I said, but I was put in Basic English. After only a week or two, I tried to switch  because it turned out to be more like Remedial English. Of course, the other English classes were all full. I had to stay in the dumbed-down class.

At least I'm taking Spanish. My first year Spanish class is held with the fourth year group. Wow, that guy in the senior class sure is cute!

For the first time in my life, I'm enjoying Physical Education. This school actually teaches tennis and the correct way to play volleyball! Before Christmas, we're suppose to learn basketball with a “keyhole” defense. I don't know what that is, but it has to be better than “man-on-man.”

***

Halloween was terrific! Our church had a bonfire and a hayride. Since the preacher owns our house, it was held here! I don't usually like being amongst a slew of people, but outside near the huge pond, it wasn't bad. Roasting marshmallows and telling ghost stories has never been so much fun!

***

Thanksgiving day was nice. My dad brought a turkey home from work and we fixed it with all the trimmings. After dinner, we went outside and played on the well-frozen pond. In southern Kentucky, November almost never gets cold enough to freeze even a small pond, much less one this size. One of my sisters has a pair of ice skates, but the rest of us enjoyed sliding around in our regular shoes!

***

It's December now, and we will soon lose our new home!! Dad has informed us that he will be laid-off. We're all worried about where we're going to live after that. I don't understand why we can't just stay here for a while. After all, we don't actually pay rent! Dad is fixing up the house in return for the preacher letting us live here.

But, Mom says we have to go and even suggested moving in with one of my aunts. Not even my richest relatives have more than one spare bedroom and this particular aunt lives in a double-wide trailer with her husband and three children!

All this stress is creating serious problems and I've literally begged my parents to find another solution!

***

We received some good news on Christmas Eve! Dad had spent last weekend in Russellville and is going back to work where he has been employed for most of my life! The only house he could find is the exact same one we moved out of in September. It only has about five rooms and a bathroom, but, at least, we'll know our neighbors. That's a lot better than living with my aunt, trust me!

On Christmas morning, all five of us children discovered at least three presents each! I don't know how Mom & Dad did it without the Salvation Army's help, but I suspect our landlord/preacher had something to do with it.

I've been back in Russellville for two weeks and I can't even recall what my presents were, but I still think this was a Christmas worth remembering!!

“Christmas in Missouri” is based on a real life experience, but may not be 100% true.

Christmas Gift # 1: Advent at the Reservoir

 Advent at the Reservoir

I don’t know anymore who You are

or care how many names you have.

It is enough that when the old man’s

gnarled hands cannot fasten a zipper,

his friend kneels before him to help.

It is enough that even two dark

military transport planes disappear

into fish scale clouds presaging rain.

It is enough that mallards pull in

their heads while paddling furiously

out into cold, gray water.

And it is wondrously, gloriously more

than ever enough that notes from a

Shaker tune hold and hold and hold

while words come,  “Dance, then…”

And one whole created day is held,

shimmering, contained with

two quarter beats.

Thankful We Are Writers

It’s time for the November meeting of the Owensboro Writers Group.  Join us this Saturday at the Daviess County Public Library on Frederica St. in Owensboro.  We’ll be waiting for you in the meeting room on the second floor.  Our meeting runs from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm every third Saturday of the month.

Bring the list of publishers to which you plan to submit your completed short story.  Our long-term challenge is drawing to a close and we're nearly at the final step.

It’s been a good year so far for our writers.  We have a lot to be thankful for… some published stories and articles, a great group of writing friends, and the possibility of getting our challenge short story published.

Enjoy and celebrate this Thanksgiving with friends and family.  And let them know they and their antics may end up in your next novel.  Write on!
